Brief history of the Parish
The development of Hook as a parish started during the Second World War with the growth of Forces' establishments and new refugee groups springing up all around the Basingstoke area.
In 1941 regular Sunday Mass began in a back room of the Old White Hart in Hook, and was celebrated by a priest from Basingstoke.
Maryfield Convent , which is adjacent The Sacred Heart, is a successful home for the elderly run by the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine of Sienna (Malta).
The Sacred Heart Church at Hook was built in 1955.
In September 1999 the parish boundary was changed to include both The Sacred Heart in Hook and St. Thomas More in Hartley Wintney, which prior to this time had been part of Fleet Parish. Father Danny Burns SDS became Priest in charge of the Parish on 10th February 2002 fatherdanny @ sacredhearthook.co.uk (remove blanks from email address)
2005 was the 50th Anniversary of the building of the Sacred Heart Church and there have been extensive renovations carried out inside and outside of the Church. In January 2006 all the old wooden seats inside the church have been removed and replaced by new upholstered seats. The first services held in the church were at Christmas 1955 and the main celebrations to commemorate this event took place on 23rd June 2006 to coincide with the feast of The Sacred Heart of Jesus. (see above)
The Catholic Diocese of Portsmouth(of which we are part) is being reorganised into larger Pastoral areas and as a result the two worshipping communities of Hook and Hartley Wintney will be in different areas.
