PPC Meeting Thursday 22nd May 2008

Present: Ian Liddell, Jill Blackburn, Maggie Wood, Andrew Edworthy, Fr Danny Burns (left for Wedding practice part way through meeting)

Apologies: Jacqui Clark, Hannah Goddard, Michael Rogerson, Brendan Hickey, Trish Davies

Theme "The Prayer of Faith"

  1. Reading James 5:13-20 The Prayer of Faith
  2. Taken form the current theme of James teaching in the daily services, this reading emphasised for us the reliance of the early church on the "elders" or leaders rather than the priests.

The power of prayer was used by everyone as an effective tool and it was the duty of every member of the community to "turn sinners from the error of their ways".

  3. Lay roles and Responsibilities
  4. The latest version of our document was approved. An edited version has been given to Readers on the Saturday evening list.

ACTION: Andrew will liaise with Kevin to ensure Sunday readers are similarly informed.

Maggie attended a training day for Readers which recommended a 15 second pause after the reading before initiating the response. She valued the practical experience and will organise a "cut-down" version for our readers later in the year.

ACTION: Maggie will prepare a fact sheet for use at the training session by the next PPC meeting.

Jill requested guidance on the best use of the commemorative kneelers. The sample is in good repair and we recommend it is used at the front of the church by the votive candles. It can be stored under the chairs in the front row.

Any further kneelers could be used at the back of the church for latecomers and those without seats.

ACTION: Jill will check storage facilities for the kneelers and ensure easy cleaning

Jill explained the current difficulties with the Hymn Board – numbers slip out and awkward to hang.

ACTION: Jill will investigate design of slots, alternative number sets, alternative boards by next PPC meeting.

Andrew floated the idea of a pin board for Prayer Intentions. Subject to Fr Danny’s approval, one will be placed at the back of the church with instructions and editorial control will be maintained.

ACTION: Andrew will prepare board and instructions for discussion with Fr Danny.

Jill reminded us that the Doxology concluding the Eucharistic Prayer should ideally be sung. She suggested, for Sunday service, using a cantor to sing it and lead the great Amen and having sung Amen on Saturday.

ACTION: Jill to discuss transition to new practice with Fr Danny.

  5. PPC Communication / Magazine
  6. Michael has drafted a framework for the 2008 magazine which was approved. Size will be A4 with large enough font size for visually impaired. Colour reproduction using "friendly" facilities or commercial outlet if necessary. Reference to Hook will be expanded to include surrounding villages (Odiham, Rotherwick, Mattingley). Copies will be mailed to all addresses on the parish records (optimum size for postage?), one week later copies will be made available at all mass times. Print run needs to be around 150.

ACTION: Jill will coordinate existing pictures (copy from website) and obtain new ones where needed.

The PPC photos displayed in the church need to be refreshed and updated.

ACTION: Jill will take photos of Sunday attendees and Andrew will obtain the Saturday attendees.

Our Webmaster, Richard Sugden is keen to hand over responsibility and Jonathan Blackburn has volunteered to step in.

We plan to work with Holy Ghost parish webmaster at St Bede’s to harmonise the web infrastructure.

ACTION: Fr Danny will ask Jonathan and Richard to liaise over the content of the current site and transition to simpler maintenance process.

  7. CaFOD and action for Justice & Peace

  9. Drugs Risks event
  10. Deferred until further information available

  11. Day of recollection in Sept/Oct
  12. Andrew has provisionally booked St Lucy’s Convent, Medstead for Saturday 4th October. The plan will be to start at 10:00am, review high and low points of last few years PPC activity compared to our PPC Aims, brainstorm potential areas of involvement, revise PPC Aims and prioritise focus for the next year to 18 months. We will break for prayer and packed lunch around midday. Finish will be around 3:00pm.

ACTION: Andrew will confirm booking and prepare an outline agenda by the next meeting.

  13. "Who is my Neighbour?" talks in November
  14. Michael reported that John Bolton from Douai does not do outside talks so we will approach Tony Cashman.

ACTION: Fr Danny & Andrew to discuss with Tony
